About us

The Research, Development & Innovation department of Damen helps the company to become the most sustainable and digitally connected shipyard in the world. We support the business in developing an innovative product portfolio and offer proactive advice to improve the quality and performance of Damen products and services.

The RD&I department is divided into Research, Development, and Enabling Technologies branches, with six research teams.

Damen invests substantially in its own internal R&D projects and is also active in collaborative R&D projects with industry partners, academia, and knowledge institutes, both nationally and internationally.

The Role

The objective of the proposed graduation assignment is to have real-time measurements as a possible solution to increase the accuracy of annual CO2 emission calculations, as well as providing insight into annual emissions of other harmful substances such as NOx, PM, and UHCs. The Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) emissions regulations came into effect in 2024, requiring ships of 5000 GT and above to calculate their annual operational CII based on annual fuel consumption. Based on the CII rating, a corrective plan to reduce CO2 emissions must be developed by shipowners.

Key accountabilities

As an intern, your goal is to demonstrate the effectiveness of annual emissions assessment using real-time emission measurements on board. You will work in a team to successfully reach the end goal and implement technical and practical knowledge into solid and innovative designs.

RD&I consists of around seventy colleagues, all working on different questions and topics that are relevant to Damen and our ambitions. Within this project, you will have three direct colleagues and another intern working on relatable topics.

Your tasks may consist of the following:

  • Perform literature study on real-time emission measurements in shipping and other sectors.
  • Determine different methodologies for real-time emission measurements on board and assess their effectiveness and technical feasibility for different ship types.
  • Compare direct emissions measurements to other indirect methods for emission monitoring and reporting.
  • Assess other possible applications for the real-time emission data, besides the annual emission report (e.g., condition monitoring, smart maintenance, etc.).

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor or Master student in Electrical Engineering or Industrial Automation.
  • Autonomous, practical, and result-driven with good communication skills.
  • Good command of English, written and spoken.

What we offer

  • Competitive internship/graduation fee and travel allowance.
  • A pleasant and dynamic international work environment with an informal atmosphere.
  • Professional coaching/mentoring.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
